Wirral is well served by many private and public golf courses, leisure and fitness centres, swimming pools and outdoor pursuits. The east coast of the peninsula borders the River Mersey and it has Wirral's commercial and industrial heartlands of Birkenhead, Wallasey and Bromborough.

Further north are the local townships of West Kirby and Hoylake with the famous Royal Liverpool Golf Club, home to the Open Championship in 2006.
